Laning in The Lakes March 2004

Slightly earlier than usual, a group of us set off for a laning weekend in The Lake District. The majority of us travelled up on Friday and in turn most of us got stuck in the roadworks at Lancaster. This delay added to the fact that the winds were against us meant it took us almost a day to get there in the LJ (well 3 hours).

Saturday brought with it horizontal rain and gales – ideal weather for a trip into the countryside. We split up into our groups and set off.

As you can see from the photo below Rob and Kate struggle and fail to keep on track!

Above Steve shows off his snowboarding skills on the front of his Land rover – how cool is he!

A few lanes in and fallen trees later we pass Pat and Trevor’s group – who reveal later that the tree we had driven under on the same lane was impassable!

In the photo below I am not sure if Jonathan is in pain or just bored - probably painfully bored!

Our final mission for the day was to cross the ford – unfortunately a very large tree much too big to move (even for the big boys in our group!) had fallen in our path. So to Kate (who spent the whole afternoon asleep in the back of the Discovery) and my relief we were off back to the cottage at last.

We enjoyed a good evening back at the Engine Inn – many pints of larger later we decided that our lovely chairman looked like Harry Potter.
