All-wheel Drive Club Team Trials
at Holy Moorside

Don't be fooled by the name, it was still the Chesterfield site that we have used before. The AWDC club had again invited us to join them and we had to go to make amends for our poor driving on the last event. We decided to go on mass to improve our percentage chance of doing better.

After a rendezvous at Ferodo we had eight drivers from the club, including Russell Gill over from Sheffield who we had not met before. And to keep our spirits up on a bitterly cold day our team of supporters included: John Hutchinson, Jon Pickles, Donna, Jane Newton, Jon Dunn, Andy Moss, Linda Lythcoe, Rob Mullan and Jane. Our drivers included myself, Graham Finch, Steve Goddard, Steve Hawksworth, Lee Hutchinson, Frank Lythcoe and Gareth Newton. There were a number of classes including RTV, open and modified with approximately 25 vehicles in all.

We started as we meant to go on, and all did well on the early sections. We even got further than the modified vehicles, some with four wheel steering and air locking diffs.

The ground was extremely greasy and cars were slipping all over the place and unfortunately so were some of our lot, Steve Goddard nearly tipped his car over on the way to lunch.

Unfortunately, Lee was an early casualty with a broken front halfshaft and he wasn't even on a section and so made his way home at lunchtime to repair his Land Rover for work tomorrow.

There were a lot of sections set out, but due to the numbers of cars and everybody driving one section at a time we only completed six sections, before the weather started to close in.

Everybody did well today and we all finished higher up the leader board, Steve Hawksworth drove consistently to gain a first in his class and I had a very good day to come first in my class and first overall! The downside to this came when we loaded up ready to go home, I locked the Toyota with the keys in the ignition and the engine running in the middle of a blizzard. This is not the first time this has happened and with the help of some sticky tape a spring, a broken cane and a second pair of eyes, along with a contortionist's arm I got it open. Don't ask!
